Telephone area code 760 was created in 1997 is serving areas of southern California. After few years, it was decided to split area 760. The area to be split was San Diego County and the new code to be assigned was 442.
Some people didn'https://www.reversephonecheck.com/t want the split of area and they made an organization named Keep760.org. They raised their demand of not splitting the area 760 in front of CPUC.
However, on 16th October idea of adding new code 442 as an overlay to area '760' got approval by CPUC with effect from May 2009. New code will be used with new numbers while old numbers will be kept on running with previous code and phone numbers.
All callers would have to dial ten digit numbers instead of seven digits. Dialing appropriate code will be compulsory so that the calls connect to exact destinations.
An advantage of adding an overlay over area splitting is that no changes are required to existing numbers; however new numbers are allocated with new code.
