California is huge state both in terms of population and area it covers. It is further divided into areas including Central Coast, Northern California, Greater Sacramento, Bay Area, San Joaquin Valley, Southern California and Southern Border.
All these divisions are further divided into different areas and are assigned with different area codes for accommodating ever increasing demand of telephone lines. It becomes obligatory to split the area in order to overcome the exhaustion of phone numbers.
Unique codes are given to areas -- so the areas can be identified uniquely. The reason is just to increase the options of making more and more combinations of phone numbers.
As far as the area code 805 is concerned, it is used as telephone area code for certain areas of central coast; code 831 serves remaining areas. Area 805 was created on 1st January 1957 while area 831 was created on 11 July, 1998.
Area code 831 and code 805 covers the boundaries of Central Coast - California. Pacific Time Zone is used for all areas using area code 805.
