Area code 818 is used as telephone area code for some of the southern areas of California. There was time when area code 213 was assigned to entire Los Angeles. However phone usage increased between 1980s and 1990s as a result of population burst. Area of code 213 was divided into various new area codes for accommodating the increasing demands of telephone connections. Area Code 818 - created on 7th January 1984 was one of those newly created area codes.

Increased population and amplified demands split area 818 again and as a result new area code 626 born on 14th June 1997.

For fulfilling ever increasing demands of phone lines it was suggested in November 1999 to split a new area code 747 from code 818. New code 747 was suggested for providing services in:

However the split could not be occurred because public demanded not to split area 818 but to add overlay so that existing users of code 818 could retain same code with their phone numbers. After seeing such affiliation CPUC decided to add code 747 as an overlay to area 818 instead of splitting with effect from 18th May, 2009. After adding an overlay code 747 calls would not be completed until the code is added with phone number.

Areas are considered to be exhausted when there available phone numbers are insufficient. To overcome the problem areas are split into further smaller areas ? each new area is given a new code. Adding up new codes in existing area make it possible to provide telephone services resourcefully. Phone numbers can be repeated but the area code will always be unique.
