Area codes were not in such numbers as are today. The reason for increase is to fulfill the exhausted demand of telephones. Phone requirements for personal and business use are increasing with each passing day. This is the major reason for splitting of various areas into further parts and assigning all newly created areas with new area codes. New and unique codes are assigned to newly created areas so that to have more options of making combinations of telephone numbers.
California is huge state and contains one of the highest numbers of codes. Area code 916 was created in October 1947 and then split into area code 209 in 1958. As the customer demands for more and more telephone lines increased, area of code 916 was again split on 1st November, 1997. Area code 530 was assigned to new split area.
Area code 530 and code 916 both share geographical boundaries of Greater Sacramento.
The Area Code 916 covers California and uses Pacific Time Zone.
