The code shares its geographical boundary with area code 720; both these area codes are overlaid areas.

It was formed on 5th March 1988 as a result in split of area code 303. It was created to provide relief to area code 303 which was getting exhausted at that time. The new code was introduced to provide numbering relief to area 303 as it was getting exhausted because of the ever-increasing demands for telephone lines. The Southeastern region of the state is served by the code 719.

It was added as an overlay to code 303 on 1st June 1998; the code serves Denver and Boulder.

The code was created to give relief to the exhausted area 303. Majority areas located in the Northern and Western side of the Colorado are served by area code 970
