It was created in 1948 as a result in split of area code 317. The code 317 got a split to overcome the exhaustion of available phone numbers. The code is serving the counties of BENTON, JASPER, LA PORTE, LAKE, NEWTON, PORTER, PULASKI, ST JOSEPH, STARKE and WHITE.
