Area code 319 was originally created for serving the areas located in East-Central and southeast regions of the Iowa - the State of United States.
The code was created in 1947 and served the areas of Iowa State without any split or overlay until in late 2000 when new area code 563 was created so that to handle with exhaustion in existing area. Some of the major cities reserved for the code 319 are Keokuk, Fort Madison, Burlington, Cedar Falls and Fairbank. Area code 319 started reaching the exhausted stage because it was running out of available phone numbers because of the rapid increase in telephone demands.
Telephone lines are not only required for availing the telephone services only but people need separate telephone connections for using fax machines, dialup internet, pagers. They just don't want to compromise on delay in any of the services they need. People even need separate telephone lines for office and homes.
Such exhausted demands for telephone lines definitely make the available phone numbers run out. Areas are divided into further smaller areas so that to overcome the problem of area exhaustion. The new area code 563 created for code 319 was practically implemented in March 2001. The ten-digit dialing became obligatory by December 2001.
