Kansas Area Codes

The state of Kansas is not that populated but the North American Numbering Plan has reserved two area codes (617 and 618) for the state. Capital of the State - Topeka is getting served by area code 785. Instead of receiving code 617 and 618 at the time of NANP implementation, Kansas received two different area codes - area code 316 and 913. Area codes were not required while making long distance calls until late in 1951.

A brief description of  Kansas Area Codes is given below:

It was originally created in 1947 for serving the southern half region of the state. The code is providing telephone services in the counties of BUTLER, FINNEY, HARPER, HARVEY, MARION, RENO, SEDGWICK and SUMNER.

The code was created in 2001 as a result in split of area code 316. The Code 620 is providing telephone services in Southern region of Kansas. However, the city of Wichita and some of its surrounding areas situated within the southern region are served by the code 316.

Area code 785 was created in 1997 as a result in split of area code 785. The particular code serves the majority areas located within the Northern Kansas.

This is one of the original telephone area codes providing telephone services to the Kansas City Metropolitan area. It was created on October 1947 and was kept reserved for the entire northern region of the Kansas. However with the passage of time and due to the split - the code is now serving only few counties located adjacent to the Missouri State.
