This is one of the original telephone area codes created in 1947. The code is providing telephone services in the regions of greater New Orleans.

It was formed in 2001 for providing telephone services in Southeast regions of the state. However, New Orleans situated in southeastern part is not served by the code 985. This area code was created for providing numbering relief to area code 504.
