Area Code 318 is North American Area Code reserved for providing telephone services to Central and Northern areas of Louisiana. The code was formed in 1957 for providing numbering relief to one of the Louisiana's original area codes - area code 504.
Area code 504 was split off in 1957 because it was getting exhausted because of the mounted demands for telephone lines. New <strong>area code 318</strong> was introduced in exhausted area so that to provide telephone services resourcefully.
Interesting fact is that the code 318 was used for San Francisco for about two years (1951-1953). The reason was independent routing of calls in order to connect to destination as San Francisco and Oakland had installed separate toll-switches.
Telephone equipment used at that time could handle just three digit translation and for distinguishing between two areas it was necessary to use the 318 area code temporarily.
When the use of the 318 code was discontinued because of the availability of 6-digit translation equipment, entire San Francisco Bay Area went back to using area code 415. And the code 318 was kept reserved for future use. Standard Time Zone used by the code 318 is Central Time Zone.
Together with three other States, the State of Louisiana makes up the West South Central division of United States. The division is composed of following four States:
