A brief description of Michigan Area Codes is given below:

This area code was formed in June 1999 as a result in split of area code 616. The Code 231 is basically the northern half of the old 616 area code. In past, the Code 616 covered the entire western half of Michigan, extending west from the north-south line aligned with the Mackinac Bridge.

It was created in 1997 for providing telephone services in Oakland County and Detroit City. However, some areas of the Wayne County are also by this code. It was formed as a result in split of area code 810. The code 248 serves allocated area along with overlay area code 947 which has recently been overlaid. 

It is providing telephone services in Southwest region of the state. It was created in July 2002 as a result in split of area code 616. Lake Michigan is located on west side of area code 269, code 616 on North, 517 on East and in South is covered by three codes -- 219, 260 and 574.

It was created in 1947 for providing telephone services in the City of Detroit which is the biggest city of United States. The City is located in Michigan State and is ranked on 11th number in terms of population.

It is North American area code which was created on October 1947. It was created for serving the South Central regions located in Lower Peninsula.

It was created in 2001 for providing telephone services in the Macomb County of Michigan. It was suggested to add this area code as an overlay to area code 810; however it remained a plan. Area code 586 was split off from area code 810 and the only reason for the split was to provide numbering relief to area code 810.

It is providing telephone services in Southwest region of the state. It is one of the original area codes assigned to the state of Michigan in 1947.

It got a split in 1997 and then 2001 for creating new area codes 248 and 586 respectively.

It is one of the smallest area codes in North America which is covering Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was created on 19th March 1961 as a result in split of area code 616. The code got a split and introduced a new area code 906.

It was created for providing telephone services in the County of Oakland, particularly the Detroit suburbs. The code was introduced for serving the Oakland County only.

The code is providing telephone services in the Northeast region of the state. The region served by the code 989 was once the part of area code 517.
