It was created in 1997 as a result in split of area code 601. The code 601 is serving the counties of GEORGE, HANCOCK, HARRISON, JACKSON, MOBILE, PEARL RIVER and STONE.

It is one of the original telephone area codes created in 1947. It had kept on providing telephone services to the entire State until 1997 when it started running out of available phone numbers. In 2005, it was overlaid by area code 769.

This area code was introduced for providing numbering relief to area code 601. It is one of the original area codes created in 1947 for serving the entire State of Mississippi.
