The code is providing telephone services in the counties of DUNDY, FALL RIVER, FRANKLIN, RED WILLOW, SCOTTS BLUFF, SEDGWICK, HAMILTON, HARLAN and HAYES.

It is original area code created on October 1947 for providing telephone services in the state of Nebraska. It provided telephone services in the entire state until 1954 when it got a split and gave broth to new area code 308. It is estimated that this code will get exhausted in 2010. Area Code 531 has kept reserved for dealing with the situation. Some of the counties served by the code are BURT, BUTLER, CASS, CEDAR, SALINE, SARPY, SAUNDERS, SEWARD, STANTON, HAMILTON, HOLT and JEFFERSON.
