Area Code 201 is one of the original area codes created in 1947. The code is serving North side of New Jersey - Middle Atlantic state of United States. Majority areas of the Hudson and Bergen counties are covered by area code 201.
Before 1958, 201 was the only area code serving New Jersey. The state split the area code in that year and associated southern areas with new code 609.
The code 201split again on 8th June 1991 - the new area (North/Central areas) was assigned with area code 908. After split, the northernmost counties were completely covered by code 201.
In the mid-1990s, businesses started to prosper once again in North Jersey. This was the time when mobile phones and internet dial-up connections grew. To overcome the pressure for the addition of more telephone numbers, New Jersey introduced more area codes. Area code 201 divided again in 1997 and new area code 973 emerged. As a result the only counties covered by code 201 were Hudson County and Bergen County.
Demand for more telephone numbers increase as the two counties developed further. It was time to think for area code 201 that it should be split again, or if an overlay area code should be added instead. The second option was considered and overlay area code 551 was added on 1st December 2001, making 10-digit dialing obligatory.
