Area Code 973 was created on 1st June 1997 and serves Northern Areas of New Jersey. New Jersey is Middle Atlantic state of United States. Code 973 was established as a result of area code 201 split. Because of the population spurts and exhausted demands for telephone area 973 was overlaid by new area code 862. It became mandatory to dial a ten digit number even while making local calls.
