Area Code 505 was created in 1947 according to NANP (North American Numbering Plan). The code serves the New Mexico State of United States. The Standard Time Zone followed by the code 505 is Mountain Time Zone.
The 505 area code served the entire State as sole area code until 7th October, 2007 when it was decided to split off the area. The only reason for splitting the existing area code was to provide the telephone services to all customers resourcefully. Area Code 505 was getting exhausted because of the ever increasing demands for telephone lines. So, it was planned to introduce new area code - area code 575 for serving some of the areas of New Mexico.
Because of the intensified tensions between the urban and rural regions of New Mexico -- the Public regulation commission of New Mexico ultimately decided to postpone the decision until 2006. However a new idea to conserve numbers reduced the necessity of adding a new code. This is the reason, at present there is only one area code serving the State of New Mexico and that is the 505 area code.
