It was created on 27th April as a result in split of area code 206. The Code 253 was formed for providing numbering relief to area code 206. Some of the counties served by the code are KING, KITSAP, PIERCE and THURSTON.
This area code is allocated to the areas located in western Washington but outside of the greater Seattle metropolitan area. Previously all the areas that fall under western Washington region were part of the original code 206.
This area code was created on April 27, 1997 as a result in split of area code 206. It was assigned to the regions including Seattle, the islands of Mercer, Bainbridge and Vashon, and parts of the Seattle metro area from Des Moines to Wood way.
This area code was created as a result in split of area code 206 on 1 January 1957. The 206 afterwards was split into; 360 (1995), 245 (1997) and 253 (1997).
It was proposed in 1999 and was planned first to overlay area code 360. However, it was expended in May 2000.
