Washington, D.C. is The District of Columbia and usually known as Washington, the District, or simply D.C.; it was originated on July 16, 1790. In the beginning, The City of Washington was a separate municipality within the Territory of Columbia. In 1871, an act of Congress merged the City and the Territory into a single unit, the District of Columbia. This is why the city, while officially named the District of Columbia, is famous as Washington, D.C. The city is situated on the north bank of the Potomac River. And, it is bordered by the states of:

• Virginia to the southwest
• Maryland to the other sides

The District is populated with 591,833 residents. However, during the workweek, its population increases to over one million due to the people from the surrounding suburbs. The District is part of The Washington Metropolitan Area - population wise it is the 9th largest metropolitan area in US. The district of Washington, D.C. is served by area code 202.  This is one of the original area codes created on October, 1947. In the beginning, it was proposed as a substitute to area codes 301 and 703 working in the suburb regions of Maryland and Virginia.
At that time, the whole Metropolitan Area was using a seven-digit dialing system; that means a phone number having area code 301 could be dialed with area code 202. However, on October 1, 1990 a 10 digit-dialing system was forced in suburb regions due to the collapse of existing phone numbers stock.
