Washington, D.C. is The District of Columbia and usually known as Washington, the District, or simply D.C.; it was originated on July 16, 1790. In the beginning, The City of Washington was a separate municipality within the Territory of Columbia. In 1871, an act of Congress merged the City and the Territory into a single unit, the District of Columbia.
