Area code 508 serves Central Massachusetts - a subdivision of Great Massachusetts with hilly topography. The code 508 was assigned to areas which were previously the part of area code 617. Area code 617 got split on 16th July, 1988 when it got heavily populated and the demand for telephone connections increased. The newly split area was assigned with new area code 508.
As the population increases, states require more and more resources. With the passage of time, the code 508 also became thickly populated and as a result demand of telephone lines also increased. This is why the code 508 split gain into area code 978 in 1998.
Later on, in 2001 area code 774 was added as an overlay. The newly overlaid area covers southeastern and south central Massachusetts.
Areas are further divided into smaller parts and are assigned with different codes -- so that telephone services can be provided more efficiently.
Unique code is given to different areas so that no chance is left for phone number repetition. If any area runs out the combinations of phone numbers then the area is split or an overlay is added and new code is given to split or overlay area.
Code 508 serves areas of Central Massachusetts in New England. Central Massachusetts is covered by three area codes:
